Car Insurance Premiums: One Top Tip To Cutting The Cost

Auto insurance (including annual and temporary car insurance), is a necessary and unavoidable part of driving on British roads, but it can often be extremely expensive. However, there are some techniques you can use to lower your insurance cost; one of the best of these is using your occupation to lower your premium.

Most people don’t give the occupation section of an insurance application a second thought, simply filling out the appropriate information and moving on. However your answers to this section can have a genuine impact on the price of your premium.

The reason for this is that insurers need to gain as much valuable insight as possible from the information you’ve provided them with, so they will put occupations into categories with varying levels of perceived risk. So to an insurance provider, one occupation is seen as riskier than another, and will therefore end in a more expensive premium.

The decisions made by insurers are not just based on assumptions however; their risk assesment comes from how regularly (and for how much) different professions claim for.

It’s tough to say which professions are where in the scale, as each insurer will have their own opinion. But in general, estate agents, chefs, doctors and cabin crew are amongst the most likely professions to claim, and therefore will likely get higher quotes on their insurance. Conversely, ambulance drivers, horiticulturalists and farmers are seen as being amongst the least likely to make a claim.

It’s well worth being aware of, and you can try it out for yourself. Find an insurer who will allow you to do an instant car insurance quote and see how much the final amount differs depending on your occupation, you’ll find in some instances it can as much as double based on nothing more than your job title.

You might wonder how you can use this to improve your insurance quote; unfortunately you really can’t just lie on your application, as it could end up in your insurer rejecting your claim (should you ever have to make one). Something you can do however is change the wording of your job description – you’ll have to do a bit of experimenting but see how ‘I work in an office’ differs to ‘I work in a call centre’ and see if you can save yourself some money.

So, if your application is for one day car insurance on an old mini or annual insurance on a brand new Ferrari, it’s in your interest to do a bit of research before you fill out your application. You never know, you could end up saving a fortune!
